Calaveras Cantina

Tucked among mangroves on the Intracoastal Waterway, Calaveras Cantina is a new addition to the recently constructed Harbourside Place complex in Jupiter.

The restaurant is across the street from public docks that have 10 transient slips. The docks are open daily from 8:00 am to midnight.

calaveras cantina 1Calavera means skull in Spanish, so I wasn’t surprised to find the colorful eatery adorned with skulls and red roses. It was a balmy Saturday evening, so my family and I sat outside where we had a perfect view of the setting sun. There was no wait for a table, and the staff was friendly from the moment we arrived.

We ordered chips and fresh guacamole — it’s made tableside to your preferred level of spiciness. Our waiter provided us with a kids’ menu, which is always helpful when dining with young children. My son ordered macaroni and cheese, but it was too spicy for him. The waiter was accommodating and didn’t mind switching it out for plain pasta.

I ordered the gluten-free ensalada ranchero for dinner. The plate came piled with romaine lettuce, corn, chorizo, pico de gallo, cotija cheese, black beans, and avocado ranch dressing. It was so large I couldn’t finish it! My husband ordered fish tacos served on flour tortillas with blackened mahi mahi, fresh cilantro, pico de gallo, and a side of plantains. The menu offers other Mexican staples such as chile relleno and chicken or pork enchiladas served with red rice.

Vegetarian options include a huitlacoche mushroom quesadilla stuffed with corn, roasted leaks, mushrooms, and goat cheese. The ensalada calavera, which is suitable for vegan and gluten-free diets, is made with mixed greens, oranges, jicama, carrots, chickpeas, toasted pumpkin seeds, and a cilantro-lime dressing.

A waiter told us the owner’s wife is a dessert chef and suggested the homemade avocado ice cream for dessert. The subtle flavor of the avocado makes for a unique ice cream that we all enjoyed.

The Harbourside Place complex includes retailers, restaurants, and a hotel. There is live music at the outdoor amphitheater on the weekend. Calaveras Cantina is open from 11:00 am – 11:00 pm on Monday through Thursday, and 11:00 am – 10:00 pm on Friday and Saturday.
